Jan Kaplicky: Visionary Czech Architect
Early Life and EducationJan Kaplicky was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1937. He went on to pursue architecture at the College of Applied Arts and Architecture in Prague, graduating in 1962.
Relocation to London and Architectural Career
In 1968, Kaplicky moved to London after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. He worked in various architectural firms, including Foster and Partners, under the renowned Norman Foster.
Future Systems and Innovative Designs
In 1979, Kaplicky co-founded Future Systems with David Nixon. Known for their avant-garde designs, Future Systems' projects garnered international acclaim. Notable works include the Selfridges department store in Birmingham, which received seven awards, and the Media Centre in London, winner of six awards including the prestigious Stirling Prize.
International Recognition and Legacy
Kaplicky's innovative approach and freeform creations set him apart in the architectural landscape.
