Early Life and Musical Education
Jan Kaspersen, a Danish pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader, was born on April 22nd, 1948, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He received musical training from renowned musicians such as Duke Jordan, Kjeld Ohlson, and Herman D. Koppel and studied jazz theory with George Russell. His education also included research trips to Gambia (1983) and West Africa (1985).
Jazz Career and Collaborations
Kaspersen has been an active performer on the jazz scene since 1969, primarily in Denmark but also in Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the United States, and Russia. He has played with groups such as Blue Sun (1969-1972), Alif (1976-1978), and Nada (1978-1980) and has collaborated with Lownoon Kellerman and Dan Turell in the mid-1970s.
Leading his Own Ensembles
From 1979 onwards, Jan Kaspersen led various groups under the recurring name "Space and Rhythm Jazz." These ensembles ranged from trios to sextets, 12-piece ensembles, the "Special Occasion Band," and the 16-piece "Space and Rhythm Big Band." In the mid-1980s, he worked closely with Bob Rockwell, Simon Spang-Hanssen, Pierre Dørge, Horace Parlan, and solo pianists.
Recognition and Acclaim
Throughout his career, Kaspersen has established himself as one of the most distinctive and original jazz pianists, composers, and bandleaders. His mastery of the instrument, honed through years of collaboration with fellow musicians, is evident in his performances. His music, largely composed and arranged by himself, draws upon the jazz and blues traditions of Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, and Horace Silver.
Composition and Influence
As a composer, Kaspersen has written around 400 compositions for his own ensembles, both large and small, since the 1970s. He has composed for groups such as the "New Music Orchestra," "New Jungle Orchestra," "The Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra," "Radiojazz Gruppen," "Klyvers Big Band," and many others, as well as for 26 films and theater productions.
Recent Work and Collaborations
Kaspersen's latest album, "Happy as a Flower," was released in December 2009. The recording features Henrik Svendsen, Simon Spang-Hanssen, Nils-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Peter Danstrup, and Ole Rommer. All ten tracks, composed and arranged by Jan, are new originals, inspired by the likes of Lee Konitz, Mingus, Ornette Coleman, Roland Kirk, Charles Lloyd, Yusef Lateef, Monk, Ellington, and more.
Critical Acclaim
"Kaspersen's name deserves to be widely known; his strong barrelhouse style and pied piperesque interpolation are as good and sometimes better than that of far better-known players." (Ellen Collison, Cadence)
