Early Career and Breakthrough at AZ
Jan Kromkamp began his professional career with Go Ahead Eagles in 1998. After establishing himself as the club's starting right-back, he moved to AZ in 2003.
Under the management of Ronald Koeman, AZ became a formidable force in Dutch football. Kromkamp played a key role in their impressive run to the UEFA Cup semi-finals and a third-place finish in the Eredivisie in the 2004/05 season.
Transfer to Villarreal and Loan to Liverpool
In the summer of 2005, Kromkamp joined Spanish side Villarreal. However, he struggled to make an impact in La Liga and was soon loaned to Liverpool in January 2006 as part of a swap deal involving Josemi.
Liverpool Success and Return to PSV
At Liverpool, Kromkamp played a limited role behind Irish international Steve Finnan. Nevertheless, he made a significant contribution to the club's FA Cup triumph in 2006, coming off the bench to help force extra time and then convert his penalty in the decisive shootout.
Despite a brief but successful spell at Liverpool, Kromkamp was sold to PSV Eindhoven on deadline day of the 2006 summer transfer window.
Return to Go Ahead Eagles and Retirement
In February 2011, Kromkamp returned to his boyhood club Go Ahead Eagles, signing a three-year contract. He announced his retirement from professional football in the summer of 2013.
International Career
Kromkamp made his international debut for the Netherlands in 2004. He was named to the squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup but did not feature in any matches.
