Jan Krugier: Art Dealer, Collector, and Holocaust Survivor
Early Life and War YearsJan Krugier was born the son of a Polish Jew who was killed in the Polish army during the early days of World War II. Krugier himself participated in partisan actions in Poland before being imprisoned in the Treblinka, Auschwitz, and Bergen-Belsen Nazi concentration camps from 1943-1945.
Post-War Life and Education
After the war, Krugier lived with his father's friends in Zurich, where he was mentored by philosopher Martin Buber. He studied painting in Paris from 1947 and later worked as an antique dealer.
Founding of Galleries
In 1962, Krugier opened his first gallery in Geneva, "Galerie Jan Krugier, Ditesheim & Cie." He also established the "Jan Krugier Gallery" in New York and began collecting a private collection of paintings.
Picasso and Other Artists
Krugier became the official representative of Marina Picasso, granddaughter of Pablo Picasso, and exhibited Picasso's "Portrait of Olga Khokhlova" at the Moscow Fine Arts Salon in 2004. He was also a close friend of Alberto Giacometti and participated in the filming of Heinz Bütler's documentary about the artist in 2005.
