German Portrait and History Painter

Georg Lisiewski was a prominent German portraitist and history painter. Born into a Protestant family, he was affiliated with the Moravian Brethren.

Apprenticeship and Early Career

Lisiewski began his artistic training under Claus in Lucerne. He later traveled to Italy to study the works of the great masters. During his 22-year sojourn in Italy and Vienna, he created several historical paintings. However, he gained fame primarily for his portraits.

Portraiture Style

Lisiewski's portraits were characterized by their refined taste, rich brushwork, and pleasing tones. While some critics found his poses and expressions overly refined, his portraits were widely admired.

Artistic Influences

Lisiewski's artistic style was influenced by the works of Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Guido Reni. These masters' techniques of chiaroscuro, emotional depth, and elegance influenced Lisiewski's own approach to painting.

Portrait of Peter the Great

In 1711, Lisiewski painted a portrait of Peter the Great during the latter's visit to Carlsbad. The portrait depicts the Tsar in a three-quarter turn to the left and is now housed in the Braunschweig Gallery.
