Jan Wouters: Dutch Football Legend and Coach
Early Career at FC UtrechtJan Wouters began his footballing journey at FC Utrecht's youth academy VV Utrecht before joining the main team in 1980. Playing as a midfielder, he made his debut in November 1980 and spent six seasons with the club, scoring 21 goals in 186 appearances.
Triumph with AFC Ajax
In 1986, Wouters moved to AFC Ajax, where he spent six seasons. He played 151 matches, scored 21 goals, and won the Dutch Cup in 1987. In the same year, Ajax lifted the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, and Wouters was named Dutch Footballer of the Year in 1990.
Stints at Bayern Munich and PSV
After 10 games in the 1991/92 season, Wouters joined Bayern Munich. He played 66 matches for the German club before returning to the Netherlands in 1994 to play for PSV. After two years, he retired from playing in 1996.
International Career
Wouters made his debut for the Netherlands national team in 1980. In 1988, he won the European Championship in Germany, playing in all matches, including the final against the USSR. He also participated in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups and the 1992 European Championship.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Wouters transitioned into coaching. In 1996, he became assistant coach at FC Utrecht before taking over as head coach of Ajax's youth team in 1997. In 1999, he became the manager of the first team, winning the Dutch Cup that year. He left Ajax in 2000 and later served as assistant coach at Rangers FC in Scotland.
Return to the Netherlands
In 2006, Wouters returned to PSV, where he had previously played as a player. He became an assistant to Ronald Koeman and later served as interim head coach in 2007/08. He continued as an assistant under Huub Stevens before joining FC Utrecht in 2009 as assistant to Ton du Chatinier.
