Janet Blair, born Martha Jane Lafferty, was an American actress. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1921. Blair's stage name was taken from the name of Blair County in her state. From a young age, she sang in the church choir and participated in school theatrical productions, showing early signs of her artistic talent.
Early Career
Blair later joined a musical group where she caught the attention of a talent agent from a movie company. Her film career began in 1942 when she signed a contract with Columbia Pictures. During World War II, Blair appeared in multiple films, with notable roles in Alexander Hall's comedy "My Sister Eileen" and Victor Saville's musical "Tonight and Every Night." However, after her contract with Columbia Pictures ended, Blair took a break from the screen and focused on her theater career.
Theater Success
Blair's most successful role during that time was Nellie Forbush in the musical "South Pacific." She played this role for several years and toured extensively with the theater troupe. In the 1950s, Blair began appearing on television, including roles in series such as "Climax!," "Disneyland," and "Armstrong Circle Theatre." She also made frequent guest appearances on television shows.
Music and Later Works
In the late 1950s, Blair released the musical album "Flame Out," featuring popular ballads like "Don't Explain" and "Then You've Never Been Blue." In 1962, she played Tansy Taylor in the British horror film "Night of the Eagle" and Marge Drayton in the film "Boys' Night Out." Blair's final screen appearance was in an episode of the television series "Murder, She Wrote" in the early 1990s.
Personal Life and Legacy
In 1943, Blair married renowned pianist Louis Ferdinand Busch, but their marriage ended in divorce in 1950. During a theater tour in 1953, she met her second husband, Nick Mayo. Blair and Mayo had two children together, a son named Andrew and a daughter named Amanda. Janet Blair passed away on February 19, 2007, in Santa Monica at the age of 85 due to complications from pneumonia.
