Janina Korowicka: Polish Speed Skater and Trailblazing Coach
Early Life and CareerJanina Korowicka was born in Poland. Her passion for speed skating led her to become the Polish National Champion in 1976. She also represented Poland at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, competing in three events with a best finish of 13th place in the 3000m race.
International Accomplishments
In addition to her Polish titles, Korowicka participated in two Ice Speed Skating World Championships, placing 13th in 1975 and 23rd in 1976. She also competed in the World Junior Championships in 1973, where she met her future husband, West German speed skater Georg Friesinger.
Olympic Journey
Korowicka's Olympic experience included competing in the 1500m, 3000m, and 1000m races at the 1976 Winter Games. Her most notable performance was her 13th place finish in the 3000m event.
Retirement and Legacy
Following the 1976 Olympics, Korowicka retired from competitive skating due to pregnancy. She gave birth to her daughter, Anni Friesinger-Postma, in 1977, who went on to become a two-time Olympic champion and multiple World and European champion in speed skating. Korowicka's other children, Jan and Agnes, are also prominent figures in the sport.
Coaching Career
After her retirement, Korowicka embarked on a successful coaching career. She currently serves as the coach of the German speed skating club Frillensee in Inzell, Bavaria, near Salzburg, Austria. She has played a pivotal role in developing young skaters and helping them achieve their athletic goals.
