Lim Hyo-jun: A South Korean Short Track Speed Skater
Lim Hyo-jun is a South Korean short track speed skater who rose to fame after winning the gold medal in the 1500-meter event at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
Early Life and Swimming Career
Lim Hyo-jun was born in Daegu, South Korea, in 1996. Initially, he pursued a career in swimming. However, complications with his hearing, attributed to the training regimen in water, forced him to give up swimming while in school. Shortly after, he transitioned to short track speed skating.
Early Success and Injuries
In 2012, Lim made his mark at the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria. He secured a gold medal in the 1000-meter event and a silver medal in the 500-meter event. Unfortunately, Lim's career was soon plagued by a series of injuries, including back, ankle, calf, and wrist problems. He underwent seven surgeries to address these ailments.
Olympic Journey and Triumph
Despite the setbacks, Lim Hyo-jun persevered and earned a spot on the South Korean national short track team in April 2017. At the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, he qualified for both the 1500-meter and 5000-meter events. On February 10, Lim etched his name in Olympic history by winning the 1500-meter final with a new Olympic record time of 2:10.485.
