Janis Jurkans: A Latvian Politician and Diplomat
Janis Jurkans is a prominent Latvian politician who served as the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1990 to 1992. He is known for his controversial views and outspoken criticism of the Latvian government.
Early Life and Education
Born in Latvia to a Polish family, Jurkans graduated from the University of Latvia in 1974 with a degree in philology. He worked as a teacher before entering politics.
Political Career
In 1989, Jurkans became the co-chairman of the Committee on External Relations of the Popular Front of Latvia. The following year, he visited the United States with Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis and met with President George H.W. Bush.
Minister of Foreign Affairs
Jurkans served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from May 1990 to October 1992. His tenure was marked by his opposition to the "Citizenship Law" and his disapproval of Latvia's territorial claims regarding the Pytalovsky District of Russia.
Member of Parliament
After leaving the Foreign Ministry, Jurkans was elected to the 5th (1993), 6th (1996), 7th (1999), and 8th (2002) Saeimas (Latvian Parliament). In 2002, he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin before the parliamentary elections and received his political support.
Controversial Statements
Jurkans has been known for his controversial statements about Latvia, calling it a "dying, corrupt country" and accusing the government of dividing society between Russian- and Latvian-speaking communities.
Break from Politics
In 2005, Jurkans left the People's Harmony Party. He has since criticized the current Latvian authorities, accusing them of corruption and discrimination.
Current Activities
Jurkans currently heads the Baltic Transport and Logistics Association, which comprises 11 transit business companies. He is married to Ilze Jurkans, a former American citizen who is the head of "Baltijas Karsu Centrs" and a board member of the Latvian Savings Bank.
