Janis Krastinš: A Distinguished Latvian Architect

Early Life and Education

Janis Krastinš was born on June 23, 1943, in Riga, Latvia, to Albert Krastinš, a mathematician. He graduated with honors from the architectural department of the Riga Polytechnic Institute's Faculty of Civil Engineering in 1967.

Professional Career

Krastinš began his career as a senior architect at the "Kommunalprojekt" design institute from 1967 to 1969. He focused on designing, renovating, and decorating residential and public buildings.

Notable Projects

Some of Krastinš's prominent projects include the "Rezna" café in Rezekne (completed in 1970), which he designed in collaboration with J. Peterson, and the kindergarten on Ergļu Street in Riga (1969).

Architectural Competitions and Awards

Krastinš actively participated in architectural competitions, winning awards for his designs, including a hotel in Saldus, an administrative building in Riga, and the Majori railway station. He also contributed to the reconstruction of the Pioneers' Square and the comprehensive planning of the Krasta residential district (with architects Ivars Strautmanis and Olgerds Ostenbergs).

Publications and Academic Achievements

Krastinš authored numerous publications on architectural history. He held the titles of Doctor of Architecture (Habil.), Professor at the Riga Technical University, and Full Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
