Janu Tornell is an American dancer, model, and beauty pageant contestant best known for her appearance on the popular reality television show, "Survivor."
Early Life and Career
Born in Las Vegas, Nevada, to Juan and Maria Tornell, Janu Tornell spent some time in Spain before returning to the United States and settling in Los Angeles. After attending Los Angeles Valley Community College, she returned to Las Vegas and pursued ballroom dancing.
Pageant Success
In 1989, Tornell won the Miss Nevada USA pageant. She then competed in the Miss USA pageant in Mobile, Alabama, but did not place. The following year, she participated in the Nuestra Belleza Internacional pageant in Miami, where she placed second.
Survivor Journey
Tornell was one of the 20 contestants on "Survivor: Palau." She became the 13th person voted out under unusual circumstances. Tornell volunteered to leave the show to save fellow castaway Stephenie LaGrossa from being eliminated. It is also believed that she had strained relationships with other contestants, particularly Katie Gallagher, who finished in second place. Notably, LaGrossa was voted out three days after Tornell's voluntary departure. Janu became the fourth person in Survivor history to voluntarily leave the show and the first to become a member of the jury.
Post-Survivor Life and Career
Tornell was considered for "Survivor: Micronesia," but her spot was ultimately filled by Coby Archa. She is fluent in four languages: Spanish, English, French, and Italian. Currently, Tornell is a French instructor at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
