As a result, Hal is imprisoned, and Jasmine, who is incapable of living on her own and has no concept of earning a living, decides to move to San Francisco, where her younger sister Ginger resides.
Life in San Francisco
When Jasmine arrives in San Francisco, she is a far cry from her once aristocratic and refined self. She appears as a nervous wreck, heavily reliant on antidepressants and alcohol. In contrast, Ginger, who comes from a working-class background, is grounded and has no ambitions for a lavish lifestyle. She is a single mother raising two boys, and despite Jasmine's mistreatment of her in the past, Ginger adores her older sister. Providing Jasmine with her home, warmth, and attention, Ginger selflessly supports her sister. However, Jasmine is too consumed by her own despair to truly appreciate Ginger's sacrifices. She tries to combat her depression by first working as a nurse in a doctor's office and then enrolling in computer courses with the goal of becoming an interior designer. While she shows promise in these endeavors, Jasmine is ill-equipped to handle the realities of life. She constantly believes that her nightmare will soon end, and she will return to her life of luxury in New York, forgetting about computer classes, receptionist jobs, and San Francisco.
The Ill-Fated Relationship
A glimmer of hope shines upon Jasmine when she meets Dwight Westlake, a young and wealthy diplomat, at a party. He quickly falls in love with her, admiring her social graces, fashion sense, and style. However, Jasmine's relationship with Dwight is built on a foundation of lies, which eventually come to light. Her past reveals too many secrets, and Dwight, although initially captivated by Jasmine's glamorous persona, becomes frightened of her. In the film's conclusion, Jasmine finds herself alone once again, sitting on a bench with smeared makeup and disheveled hair, engaging in an intense internal dialogue.
