Xavier Casquero: A Spanish Footballing Journey
Early Career at Toledo and Cultural LeonesaXavier Casquero began his professional football career at Spanish club Toledo, competing in the Segunda División. He spent five seasons with the club, spending half of the 1996/97 season on loan at Cultural Leonesa.
Rise with Atlético Madrid B and Seville
In 1999, Casquero joined Atlético Madrid B and played a pivotal role in their second-place finish in the Segunda División during the 1999/2000 season. However, as Atlético Madrid was already competing in La Liga, the reserve team was ineligible for promotion. The following season, Casquero moved to Sevilla, helping the club gain promotion to La Liga in the 2000/01 season.
La Liga Debut and Success with Getafe
On August 26, 2001, Casquero made his La Liga debut for Sevilla against Barcelona, which ended in a 1-2 defeat. After spending three more seasons with Sevilla, he joined Racing Santander. In 2006, Casquero became a player for Getafe, quickly establishing himself as a regular starter.
He played a significant role in Getafe's memorable run to the quarter-final stage of the UEFA Cup in the 2007/08 season. In the quarter-final match against Bayern Munich, Casquero scored a goal, but Getafe ultimately lost the tie 4-4 on away goals.
Infamous Pepe Incident and Later Career
On April 21, 2009, Casquero was involved in an infamous incident with Real Madrid defender Pepe. In the dying minutes of the match, Pepe headbutted Casquero and then kicked him while he was on the ground, resulting in a red card and a penalty kick that Casquero failed to convert. Real Madrid went on to win the match 3-2, and Pepe was banned for 10 games.
Casquero continued to play professionally until his retirement in 2015, representing clubs such as Deportivo La Coruña and NK Čelik Zenica.
