Jean Babilee was born in 1923 in Paris. He graduated from the school of the Paris Opera in 1941, where he studied under the best Russian dancers who had immigrated to France. He became famous for his virtuosity, astounding the audience with his record-breaking number of rotations and his ease in performing the most complex classical ballet movements.

He performed in the companies of Marika Besobrasova and Roland Petit, and from 1952 to 1956, he was a soloist with the Paris Opera. From 1956 to 1959, he led his own company. At the age of 82, Babilee continues to perform in productions specially created for him. He is a beloved figure in the dance world, having worked with renowned choreographers such as Jean Cocteau, Luchino Visconti, Roland Petit, and Maurice Bejart. He created the lead role in the iconic European ballet of the 1950s, "The Youth and Death."
