Jean Becker
Early Life and CareerJean Becker was an Alsatian-born German violinist. His musical journey began at a young age, and by the age of 16, he was already touring Europe. Becker's exceptional talent soon led him to become the first violinist of the renowned Florentine Quartet from 1866 to 1880.
The Florentine Quartet
The Florentine Quartet was one of the most celebrated chamber ensembles of its time. Becker's contribution to the quartet was significant, and it is fitting that Antonín Dvořák dedicated his 10th String Quartet specifically to the Florentine Quartet. Becker's performance with the group remains a testament to his artistry.
Later Years and Legacy
Following the dissolution of the Florentine Quartet, Becker formed a family quartet. Joining him were his sons Hans (viola) and Hugo (cello), and his daughter Jeanne (piano). This ensemble showcased Becker's ability to nurture musical talent within his family.
Becker also made notable contributions to the violin repertoire with his compositions. His educational and virtuosic pieces have enriched the repertoire for aspiring violinists. In recognition of his achievements, a street in his hometown was named Jean-Becker-Stra?e in his honor.
