Antonio Guarnieri

Early Life and Education

Born in Genoa, Italy to a theater director, Antonio Guarnieri received his first musical lessons from his father. He later graduated from the Bologna Musical Lyceum (1902), where he studied violin with Adolfo Massarenti and composition with Giuseppe Martucci and Marco Enrico Bossi.

Chamber Music Career

After graduating, Guarnieri established himself as a prominent chamber musician, performing in duos with pianists Ernesto Consolo and Attilio Brugnoli, in trios with pianist Mezio Agostini or Alfredo Casella and cellist Gilberto Crepax, and in the renowned quintet led by Bruno Mugellini.

Teaching and Performing Abroad

In 1906, Guarnieri was appointed head of the violin department of the Parma Conservatory, where he taught until 1914. He then briefly taught at the Scharwenka Conservatory in Berlin before moving to Rome in 1915. In 1927-1929, he led the violin course at the Mannes College in New York City before returning to Rome.

Festival Director and Composer

From 1936-1946, Guarnieri co-directed the Festival of Contemporary Music as part of the Venice Biennale, initially with Alfredo Casella and later with Goffredo Petrassi. During this time, he also served as a co-director of the Teatro La Fenice (1940-1946).

Guarnieri also composed numerous works for violin, including exercises and transcriptions. Notably, he published a collection of unpublished violin works by 18th-century Italian composers in 1914.
