Early Life and Musical Career
Jean-Benjamin de Laborde was born into a wealthy banking family in France in 1734. He received music lessons in violin and composition at an early age and composed his first opera, "Le Rossignol," at the age of 17. In 1751, his opera "Le Rossignol ou Le Mariage secret" premiered in Paris, launching his successful career as a composer.
Publications and Collaborations
In addition to music, de Laborde was also a prolific writer and publisher. In 1780, he published his "Essai sur la musique ancienne et moderne," an influential treatise on music history. He also collaborated with Anton Zurlauben on the publication of "Tableaux topographiques, pittoresques, physiques, historiques, moraux, politiques, litt?raires, de la Suisse," a comprehensive encyclopedia on Switzerland.
Financial Career and Revolution
Beyond his creative pursuits, de Laborde also managed his family's banking business. However, with the outbreak of the French Revolution, his wealth and connections made him a target. In 1791, he published a collection of "Thoughts and Maxims," which included reflections on the chaotic state of France.
Tragic Demise
Just four days before the fall of Robespierre and the end of the Reign of Terror, de Laborde was arrested and guillotined on July 29, 1794. His execution was a tragic loss for French culture and a reminder of the dangers of the revolutionary era.
