Bernard Tétu (1927-2016): A Renowned French Violinist and Conductor
Bernard Tétu was a distinguished French violinist and conductor who left an enduring mark on the world of classical music.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1927, Tétu began his musical journey at the prestigious Paris Conservatoire under the guidance of renowned maestros Pierre Dervaux and Igor Markevitch.
Ensemble Work and String Quartet
In 1958, Tétu joined the Ensemble de Musique Contemporaine as a soloist. Inspired by its adventurous repertoire, he founded his own string quartet in 1965, leading it for over three decades.
Orchestral Leadership
Tétu established a strong reputation as a conductor. He led the Rouen Chamber Orchestra (1973-1982) and the Rennes City Orchestra (1981-1985). In 1977, he became the musical consultant for the Orchestre Lamoureux, rising to the position of principal conductor in 1983. During his tenure, he conducted the orchestra's 1000th concert on March 10, 1991.
Teaching and Legacy
From 1984 onwards, Tétu shared his expertise as a professor of chamber music at the Paris Conservatoire. His passion for music and mentorship inspired generations of musicians.
Memorial Tribute
Upon Tétu's passing in 2016, composer Max Pinchard dedicated a powerful work to his memory. "L'Archet brisé" (The Broken Bow), a prelude for nine instruments, serves as a poignant tribute to Tétu's artistry and unwavering dedication to the world of music.
