Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Born on January 27, 1918, in Birmingham, England, to Norwegian parents, Lyle "Skitch" Henderson found himself in America at the tender age of four after his mother's tragic passing and his father's decision to send him to live with his maternal aunt. Music quickly became an integral part of his life in the town of Halstad, Minnesota, where he began playing the piano within months of his arrival. Despite never formally completing musical studies, Henderson's childhood lessons provided a solid foundation for his future career.
A Multifaceted Career
In the 1930s, Henderson embarked on his professional career as a pianist, entertaining patrons at small-town Midwestern restaurants. His talent eventually led him to perform with renowned entertainers such as Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. After World War II, Henderson transitioned to radio, promoting the careers of music legends like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. The latter is credited with originating the nickname "Skitch," which became synonymous with Henderson's identity.
From Radio to Television
In 1951, Henderson made the leap to television, joining NBC as its musical director and conductor for televised orchestras. His musical contributions spanned decades, with numerous recordings released as an orchestra member or conductor. A remastered collection of his work now fills an impressive 78 compact discs. Henderson's distinctive laugh, often captured on recordings, became a familiar and frequently parodied aspect of his public persona.
Personal Controversies
In 1974, Henderson faced charges of tax evasion amounting to over $350,000, resulting in a six-month prison sentence. Years later, he was accused of sexual harassment by NBC employees, allegations that remained unsubstantiated.
Family and Legacy
Henderson married in 1958 and became the father of two daughters, one of whom, Heidi, married actor William Hurt. He passed away on November 1, 2005, in New York City, at the age of 87. Skitch Henderson's legacy lives on through his vast musical contributions and the memorable impact he left on the entertainment industry.
