Early Life and Career
Jean Durand, a French director and screenwriter, was born in Paris to a Burgundian family. He began his career in the early 1900s, working for the satirical magazine "Le Pêle-Mêle." He also wrote short theater plays and performed on stage.
Pathé and "Le Luxe"
Durand joined Pathé Film Studios in 1908, where he directed three comedic films, including "He Is Too Trusting" (1908) starring Maurice Chevalier. He later moved to "Le Luxe" Film Studio, where he collaborated with actors Robert Péguy (Marcel Robert) and René Hervil.
The "Calino" Series
In 1909, Durand joined the "Calino" series, the first French comedic film series, at Gaumont Film Studios. He directed several films in this series, which continued until 1913. The cast members, known as "les pouics," included Bourbon, Polo, Max Bonnè, Grizolet, Fouchet, Amos the singer, Sarah Duhamel, and Hector Jandre.
Post-War Career
Durand's career was interrupted by World War I. After his demobilization, he directed films for the "Nalpas" studio.
