Biography of Jean Hagen
Jean Shirley Hagen was an American actress and nominee for an Academy Award in 1952. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Christian Hagen, a Dutch immigrant, and his American wife, Mary. When Jean was 12 years old, her family moved to Elkhart, Indiana, where she completed high school. She then studied drama and worked as a ticket seller at a theater before making her film debut in "Adam's Rib" (1949). Her breakthrough role came in the film "The Asphalt Jungle" (1950), which was praised by both critics and audiences.

Success with "Singin' in the Rain"
However, Jean became most famous for her role in the film "Singin' in the Rain." She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Lina Lamont, a silent film actress. Despite her success, MGM, the studio she worked for, struggled to offer her substantial roles that would further her career. In 1953, Jean transitioned to television and began appearing in the series "Make Room for Daddy."
Television Career and Later Life
Although Jean received three Emmy nominations for her role in the series, she was eventually replaced by Marjorie Lord, as the producers cited her unsatisfactory work. Unable to continue her film career, Jean became a frequent guest star in various television series and occasionally appeared in small film roles, such as Frida Daniels in "The Shaggy Dog" and a friend of Bette Davis in "Dead Ringer."
In 1960, Jean's health began to deteriorate, and she spent many years in clinics and medical facilities. In 1976, she attempted a comeback with minor roles in the series "Starsky and Hutch" and "The Streets of San Francisco." Her last work was the television film "Alexander: The Other Side of Dawn" in 1977.
On August 29, 1977, at the age of 54, Jean Hagen passed away from throat cancer. In recognition of her contributions to television, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1502 Vine Street).
