Early Life and Education

Jean Krantz was born on September 12, 1849, in Nancy, France. He excelled in his studies and eventually matriculated at the prestigious École Normale Supérieure in Paris in 1873. Krantz graduated third in his class in 1877.

Academic Career

In 1882, Krantz successfully defended his doctoral dissertation, "Essai sur l'Esthétique de Descartes," earning his doctorate in philology. The following year, he joined the faculty of the University of Nancy as a professor of French literature.

Krantz rose through the academic ranks, becoming Dean of the Faculty of Philology in 1890 and Honorary Dean in 1902. His contributions to the field of French literature were widely recognized.

Research and Publications

Krantz's doctoral dissertation examined the relationship between Cartesian philosophy and 17th-century classical literature. He published numerous critical essays in journals and authored several books, including "L'art en Lorraine" (1886) and "Etude sur Grandville."

Later Years and Legacy

Krantz retired from the University of Nancy in 1919. He continued to pursue his scholarly interests and passed away on June 1, 1925, in Nancy. Krantz left behind a notable legacy as a prominent French philologist and literary critic.
