Biography of Jean Leray

Jean Leray was a French mathematician who was born into a family of educators. He spent his youth in Nantes and Rennes and later attended the École Normale Supérieure from 1926 to 1929. In 1933, he earned his doctoral degree in hydrodynamics under the supervision of Henri Villat.

Contributions and Imprisonment

Leray collaborated with Polish mathematician Juliusz Schauder and together they published a joint work titled "Topologie et équations fonctionnelles" in the "Annales de l'École Normale Supérieure" in 1934. They developed the Leray-Schauder fixed-point method. In 1936, Leray became a professor at the University of Nancy.

During World War II, Leray served as an officer and was taken prisoner in 1940. He spent five years in a prisoner-of-war camp, Oflag XVII-A, in Edelbach, Austria. Despite his confinement, Leray continued his research and published a work titled "Cours de topologie algébrique professé en captivité" (1945).

Later Career and Achievements

After his release from captivity, Leray became a professor at the University of Paris from 1945 to 1947, and then at the Collège de France from 1947 to 1978. He became a member of the French Academy of Sciences in 1953 and was also a member of numerous international academies, including the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, the National Academy of Sciences of the United States, the Royal Society of London, the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Belgian Royal Academy of Sciences, and several others.

Leray made significant contributions to functional analysis, algebraic topology, and hyperbolic partial differential equations. He received several prestigious awards for his work, including the Malaxa Prize in 1938 (shared with Juliusz Schauder), the French Academy of Sciences Prize in 1940, the Feltrinelli Prize from the National Academy of the Lynxes in 1940, the Wolf Prize in Mathematics in 1979, and the M.V. Lomonosov Gold Medal from the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1988.

In recognition of his achievements, Leray was also made an honorary member of the Polish Mathematical Society in 1992. Overall, Jean Leray's contributions to mathematics have had a lasting impact on the field and his work continues to be studied and appreciated by mathematicians worldwide.
