Early Life and Career
Jean-Louis Gassée was born in Paris, France. He graduated with a degree in science from the University of Paris-Sud XI. Gassée began his career in 1968 at Hewlett-Packard, working in its French, European, and South American branches.
Apple Computer Executive
In 1980, Apple Computer offered Gassée the opportunity to establish its French subsidiary. He successfully completed this task and later relocated to California to work at the company's American headquarters. In 1985, Gassée played a role in the departure of Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Shortly after, Gassée assumed the role of CEO and oversaw the development of the Macintosh computer.
Be Incorporated
Disagreements with Apple CEO John Sculley led to Gassée's resignation in 1990. In 1991, he founded Be Incorporated, attracting many former Apple employees. The company's goal was to develop the BeOS operating system, which found niche applications in various devices. However, Be Incorporated struggled to establish a significant market share, and it was acquired by Palm Computing in 2001.
PalmSource Chairman
In 2004, Gassée became the chairman of the board of PalmSource, a company that developed operating systems for handheld devices.
Legacy and Accomplishments
Jean-Louis Gassée played a key role in the growth of Apple Computer during the 1980s. He also founded and led Be Incorporated, a pioneer in the development of alternative operating systems. Gassée currently resides in Palo Alto, California, and serves on the boards of several prominent corporations.
