Biography of Jean-Luc Chaignaud

Jean-Luc Chaignaud is a French singer and baritone. He attended the Paris Conservatory, studying alongside Régine Crespin and Gabriel Bacquier. After his time at the conservatory, Chaignaud joined the School of Lyric Arts at the Paris Opera.

In 1988, Chaignaud made his international debut, thanks to the help of Christa Ludwig, who helped him secure the coveted role of Silvano in "Ballo in Maschera" with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Herbert von Karajan. He later reprised this role at the Salzburg Festival.

In 1991, Chaignaud became a member of the Vienna State Opera, where he performed some of his most famous roles, including Marcello in "La Bohème," Belcore in "L'Elisir d'Amore," and Escamillo in "Carmen." In 1992, he made his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Hamburg State Opera, performing in "Le Nozze di Figaro." That same year, Chaignaud appeared at the Bregenz Festival as Escamillo.

In 1993, Chaignaud made his debut at La Scala in Milan, portraying Ford in "Falstaff," under the direction of Riccardo Muti. Throughout his career, he has performed in major opera houses around the world, including Vienna, Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Bonn, Cologne, Dresden, Paris, London, Genoa, Athens, and Barcelona. He has also regularly appeared at opera festivals such as the Schleswig Holstein Festival, Bregenz Festival, Rotterdam Festival, and the Aix en Provence Festival.

In 2000, Chaignaud successfully debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, portraying Marcello in "La Bohème."
