Jean Moulin: A Martyr of the French Resistance

Early Life and Military Service

Jean Moulin was born in Béziers, France, on June 20, 1899. During the final months of World War I, he served in the French Army in Albertville and Aveyron.

Political Career

After the war, Moulin pursued a career in administration and politics. He became an assistant to the Minister of Aviation in 1936 and was appointed Prefect of Eure-et-Loir in 1940.

Resistance Leader

With the outbreak of World War II, Moulin joined the French Resistance. He worked closely with Charles de Gaulle and became one of the leaders of the French National Committee.

Arrest and Death

On June 21, 1943, Moulin was arrested by the Gestapo in Lyon. He was subjected to brutal torture by Klaus Barbie, the head of the Lyon Gestapo. Moulin died on a train near Metz on July 8, 1943, while being transported to a concentration camp.

Legacy

Moulin's remains were transferred from the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris to the Panthéon in 1964. Streets, schools, and the University of Lyon 3 bear his name. In 1993, the Bank of France issued a two-franc coin featuring his portrait.
