Early Life and Activism
Boris Kraigher was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, into the family of the Slovenian playwright Alojz Kraigher. From 1932 to 1934, Boris studied engineering at the University of Ljubljana. As a student, he actively participated in the left-wing youth movement and anti-royalist demonstrations.
Political Imprisonment and Recovery
In 1934, Kraigher joined the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (CPY). However, he was arrested and sentenced to two and a half years in prison. After serving his sentence, he returned to Ljubljana in 1937 and resumed his studies and political activism.
Role in the Communist Movement
From 1937 to 1940, Kraigher served as Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth of Slovenia. He also became a member of the Youth Commission of the CPY Central Committee. In 1940, he was elected to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Slovenia.
World War II and Partisan Resistance
During the Nazi occupation of Yugoslavia, Kraigher worked underground as Secretary of the Ljubljana district committee. In December 1941, he became Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Slovenia for organizational matters. He was elected to the Politburo in May 1942.
Kraigher was arrested by Italian forces and interned at the Gonars camp. He escaped in August 1942 and joined the partisan resistance movement. From March 1945, he served as Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Slovenia.
Post-War Career
In the post-war years, Kraigher held several prominent positions, including Minister of Internal Affairs (1946-1953) and Chairman of the Executive Council of the People's Republic of Slovenia (1953-1962). From 1963, he served as Deputy Chairman of the Federal Executive Council of Yugoslavia and Minister of Economy. Kraigher was a member of the Central Committee of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia (SKJ) from 1948.
