Jean-Paul Martan was born in Paris in 1943. He attended Claude Bernard High School and later studied Germanic linguistics from 1965 to 1969. From 1971 to 1975, he pursued Romance-Germanic philology at various universities in France.
After passing the state exam, Martan worked as a teacher of French and German at the Hechstadt/Aisch Gymnasium. In 1980, he began teaching at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt.
In 1985, Martan defended his dissertation in Gießen on the topic of "The Structure of Didactic Competencies in Students." Ten years later, in 1995, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on "The Project of Anthropologically Grounded Curriculum in Foreign Language Education."
Martan is widely known for his pedagogical concept called "Learning through Teaching" or "Unterricht durch Unterrichten." This concept has been instrumental in achieving significant success in the educational process in middle schools, high schools, lyceums, and higher education institutions. Initially applied in French language lessons, the "Learning through Teaching" concept has been successfully introduced in schools across Germany in various subjects.
In 1987, Martan created the "Learning through Teaching" network, which currently connects over 800 teachers worldwide.
Currently, Professor Martan is involved in the development of an interdisciplinary virtual course for higher education institutions focused on fostering internet competency and project competency. This course emphasizes collective knowledge creation and is based on the theory that views students as neurons, drawing an analogy to neural network models.
Jean-Paul Martan's contributions to the field of didactics and his innovative teaching methods have made a significant impact on educational practices in Germany and beyond.
