Early Life and Career
Born in France, Gilbert Jean-Jacques Allard began his career as a music producer in the late 1970s. Based in Paris, he produced albums for a diverse range of jazz legends, including Gil Evans, Laurent Cugny, Helen Merrill, Charlie Haden, Hank Jones, Stan Getz, Kenny Barron, John McLaughlin, Graham Haynes, Christiane Eda-Pierre, Bheki Mseleku, Juliette Gréco, and Laïka Fatien.
International Acclaim
Allard's work with Abbey Lincoln and Randy Weston revitalized their international careers. He also oversaw the reissue of seminal albums by Jimmy Giuffre, Chet Baker, Bobby Jaspar, and Miles Davis.
Executive Career
In 1998, Allard became Managing Director of the French branch of Polydor. He also led their jazz and classical divisions. From 2007, Allard was in charge of publications at Universal Music Publishing France MGB.
Honors and Legacy
In 2012, Allard received the Victoires du jazz honorary award. In 2014, he relaunched the Impulse! label for archival reissues. The same year, he was awarded the Bruce Lundvall Award at the Montreux Jazz Festival for his outstanding contributions as a producer.
Passing
Gilbert Jean-Jacques Allard passed away on May 18, 2024, at the age of 67, after a courageous battle with an illness. His legacy as a visionary music producer and influential figure in the jazz world will continue to inspire generations to come.
