Early Life and Education

Jean Rostand was born in Paris on October 30, 1894, to renowned writer Edmond Rostand and poetess Rosemonde Gérard. As a young boy, he was inspired to pursue biology after reading Jean-Henri Fabre's "Souvenirs entomologiques."

Scientific Career

Rostand established his own laboratory in a small town near Paris, where he conducted extensive research for his entire life. Despite his scientific endeavors, he also maintained a philosophical interest, authoring numerous essays and treatises.

Literary Contributions

Rostand was a prolific writer, penning philosophical works such as "Mariage" (Marriage), "Pensées d'un biologiste" (Thoughts of a Biologist), and "Inquiétudes d'un biologiste" (Anxieties of a Biologist). His insightful aphorisms were collected in these books.

Recognition

In 1959, Rostand was inducted as a member of the prestigious French Academy. His contributions to both science and philosophy were widely acknowledged and respected.

Legacy

After his death in Ville-d'Avray on February 4, 1977, Rostand was laid to rest in the same town. In 1951, an Antarctic island in Adélie Land, Cape Geology, was named Île Jean Rostand in his honor.
