Early Life and Career
Jean Simmons was born in Crouch Hill, London, England on January 31, 1929, the youngest of four children to Charles Simmons and Winifred Loveland Simmons. Her father passed away when she was 16 years old.

At the age of 14, Simmons began her acting career. During World War II, she and her family were evacuated to Winscombe, Somerset. After returning to London, she enrolled in the Aida Foster School of Dance.

Transition to Hollywood
Director Val Guest was impressed by Simmons' talent and offered her a role in his comedy "Give Us the Moon" (1944). In 1946, she received international acclaim for her portrayal of Estella in David Lean's "Great Expectations." Her role as Ophelia in Laurence Olivier's "Hamlet" (1948) earned her her first Oscar nomination.

In 1950, Simmons married actor Stewart Granger, with whom she co-starred in the film "King Solomon's Mines" (1950). She became a US citizen in 1956 and continued her successful transition to American films.

Hollywood Stardom
Simmons appeared in Otto Preminger's film noir "Angel Face" (1952) and starred alongside Spencer Tracy in the biopic "The Actress" (1953), which she considered one of her favorite films. She also starred in "The Robe" (1953), "The Egyptian" (1954), "Guys and Dolls" (1955), "The Big Country" (1958), "Elmer Gantry" (1960), and "Spartacus" (1960).
Stage and Television Success
In the 1970s, Simmons focused on theater and television. She toured the United States with the musical "Little Night Music," played Desiree Armfeldt in the London production of the show, and starred as Fiona Cleary in the television miniseries "The Thorn Birds" (1983), which earned her an Emmy Award.
Later Career and Legacy
Simmons continued to appear in films and television shows in her later years, including "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1988), "Howl's Moving Castle" (2004), and "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" (2001). She also appeared in the British drama "Shadows in the Sun" (2009).
Simmons received two Oscar nominations for her performances in "Hamlet" and "The Happy Ending" (1969). She was a highly respected and influential actress who made a significant contribution to both British and American cinema. She passed away on January 22, 2010, at the age of 80.
