Jeanne Elizabeth Crain, known professionally as Jeanne Crain, was an American actress. Born in 1925 in Barstow, California, Jeanne was the daughter of George A. Crain and Loretta Carr. Her family moved to Los Angeles when she was a child. In her school days, Jeanne caught the attention of the public when she won the title of "Miss Pan Pacific" at the Pan Pacific Auditorium.
Although she didn't make it into Orson Welles' acting troupe, Jeanne made her film debut in 1943 at the age of 18 in the movie "The Gang's All Here". She gained national recognition with roles in films such as "Home in Indiana" and "In the Meantime, Darling" in 1944.
Despite initial criticism of her acting abilities, Jeanne secured leading roles in movies like "Winged Victory", "State Fair", and "Leave Her to Heaven" in the mid-1940s. In 1949, she won an Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Elia Kazan's "Pinky".
In 1951, Jeanne unexpectedly landed the leading role in "People Will Talk" while heavily pregnant, replacing another actress. She also appeared in Charles Brackett's "The Model and the Marriage Broker" the same year. In 1952, she starred in "Belles on Their Toes".
However, by 1953, Jeanne's contract was terminated due to the rising popularity of Marilyn Monroe. She continued her acting career with films like "Man Without Star" and "Gentlemen Marry Brunettes" in the mid-1950s, showcasing her talent as a dancer.
By the 1960s, Jeanne Crain's appearances on screen became increasingly rare. Her last notable role was playing Nefertiti in the 1961 film "Nefertiti, regina del Nilo". She made her final film appearance in "Skyjacked" in 1972.
On December 31, 1946, Jeanne married Paul Brinkman against her parents' wishes. They remained married until his death in October 2003. The couple had seven children, one of whom pursued a career in television. Jeanne Crain lived in Santa Barbara, California, until her death on December 14, 2003, from a heart attack. She was laid to rest in a cemetery in Santa Barbara.
