Early Life and Beginnings
Jeff Ament was born on March 10, 1963, in Havre, Montana. He grew up in the small town of Big Sandy, where he began playing bass guitar as a teenager. After dropping out of The University of Montana, he moved to Seattle with his band Deranged Diction.
Green River and Mother Love Bone
In Seattle, Ament met Stone Gossard and Steve Turner and joined their band Green River. The group released several albums but disbanded in 1987 due to internal conflicts. Ament and Gossard remained together and formed Mother Love Bone, bringing in Malfunkshun vocalist Andrew Wood. The band recorded a critically acclaimed EP and was preparing to release its debut album, "Apple," when Wood died tragically in 1990.
Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam
Following Wood's death, Ament and Gossard participated in the Chris Cornell-led project Temple of the Dog, a tribute to Wood. It featured Eddie Vedder on the hit song "Hunger Strike." After the album's release, Ament, Gossard, and Mike McCready founded Pearl Jam, in which Ament continues to play today.
