Garlin grew up in the suburbs of Chicago where his father owned a plumbing business and his mother worked in a local theater. At the age of eight, Garlin attended a show by Jimmy Durante and decided that he wanted to pursue a career in entertainment. He attended Nova High School in Florida and later enrolled in the University of Miami to study acting.
