Jeffrey Brillhart: A Multifaceted Musician

Early Life and Education

Jeffrey Brillhart, a native of Iowa, earned his Master's degree from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied organ with Russell Saunders and piano with Barbara Lister Sink. His early musical education laid the foundation for his illustrious career.

A Leader in Organ Performance

Brillhart first gained national recognition for his organ improvisation skills when he won the 1994 National Competition in Organ Improvisation sponsored by the American Guild of Organists. Since then, he has established himself as a leading organist and performer, showcasing his talents throughout Europe and South America.

Musical Director of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church

In January 1983, Brillhart became the Director of Music and Fine Arts at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania. His responsibilities include leading the Senior Choir and Bryn Mawr Chamber Singers, directing the "Vespers Series," and overseeing all children's and youth choirs. He also serves as the principal church organist.

Musical Leadership at Singing City

In 1999, Brillhart was appointed Music Director of Singing City, a Philadelphia-based volunteer choral organization known for its racial and religious integration. As Music Director, he oversees the organization's concert series, educational programs, and outreach initiatives. Under his leadership, Singing City has performed in Cuba, Northern and Republic of Ireland, and has collaborated with renowned musicians like Helmuth Rilling, Dave Brubeck, and Nick Page.

Teaching Organ Improvisation at Yale University

In May 2005, Brillhart became a lecturer in organ improvisation at Yale University. His innovative textbook, "Breaking Free: Finding a Personal Language for Organ Improvisation through 20th-century French Improvisation Techniques," provides a comprehensive approach to the art of improvisation.

A Dedicated Musician with a Global Impact

Brillhart's busy schedule includes organ recitals, teaching, and conducting, taking him to prestigious venues and international destinations. His passion for music and commitment to excellence have earned him respect and admiration within the musical community and beyond.
