Early Life and Influences

Eric Reed Boucher was born on June 17, 1958, in Boulder, Colorado. His parents were a psychiatrist and a librarian. From a young age, Boucher developed an interest in international politics and current events, recalling the assassination of President John F. Kennedy as one of his earliest memories. Boucher's love for rock music ignited upon hearing it for the first time when his parents' radio serendipitously tuned into a rock station in 1965.

Political Activism and Music Beginnings

In the 1970s, Boucher actively participated in anti-war protests against the Vietnam War and other political rallies. His musical career began in 1977 when he joined The Ravers as a roadie. In the same year, he enrolled at the University of California, studying theater before dropping out to pursue music full-time.

Dead Kennedys and Political Lyrics

In June 1978, Boucher placed a newspaper advertisement that caught the attention of East Bay Ray. Together, they formed the punk rock band Dead Kennedys. Boucher, who lacked musical proficiency, wrote politically charged lyrics and hummed melodies into a tape recorder, which he would then present to the band during rehearsals. This unorthodox approach led to future disputes over songwriting credits.

Dead Kennedys' debut single, "California Uber Alles," parodied Governor Jerry Brown's speeches and became Boucher's first popular song. A cover version later appeared on recordings by other artists. In 1981, the band released the controversial single "Too Drunk to Fuck," which charted highly in the UK. Dead Kennedys recorded several more albums but disbanded after a period of decline.

Alternative Tentacles and Spoken Word

Boucher continued to record with other bands and release solo spoken word albums. In 1979, he ran for Mayor of San Francisco as a joke, proposing satirical policies such as mandatory clown outfits for businessmen and a ban on automobiles. He finished fourth with 3.5% of the vote.

Boucher was nominated for the US presidency by the New York Green Party in 2000. Despite a well-received speech at the party's convention, Ralph Nader was elected as the Green Party's candidate. Boucher remained active in Nader's presidential campaigns in 2004 and 2008 and was considered a potential candidate in 2012.
