Biography of Jeremy Gilley
Early Life and CareerJeremy Gilley, the founder of Peace One Day, is an English actor, director, and producer. From a young age, Jeremy displayed exceptional acting talent, which was noticed by his parents and teachers. He grew up in Southampton, England, and at the age of 17, he joined the renowned Royal Shakespeare Company to pursue a career in theater. Although he did not receive significant roles, Jeremy formed friendships with prominent actors in Britain. With his charismatic personality, he easily established relationships with directors and colleagues.
After more than a decade of performing on stage, Jeremy founded his own film company, P.U.R.E. Productions, in 1994. Due to budget constraints, he primarily focused on making documentaries and television shows. While he achieved his dream of dedicating his life to film and theater, a new idea struck him. Jeremy believed that art and cinema exist to improve people's lives. He realized that in the 20th century, there had never been a day when all wars ceased. This realization motivated Jeremy to dedicate himself to the goal of establishing a day of global non-violence.
The Birth of Peace One Day
Jeremy faced skepticism and doubt from friends, family, and officials who believed his idea was impossible. Undeterred, he began filming the documentary "Peace One Day" and lobbied government institutions and city councils to raise awareness of the issue. Eventually, Jeremy was invited to the United Nations, where his plan was approved with some amendments. The governments of England and Costa Rica became sponsors of the initiative.
Although September 21st was officially designated as the day of global ceasefire, no significant change occurred. Determined to make a difference, Jeremy enlisted the support of celebrities, including Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie. Festivals began to be organized on September 21st, but their impact was limited to a small group of people. In a final effort, Jeremy and his friend, actor Jude Law, embarked on a film project in Afghanistan, documenting the realities of war and meeting with teachers and peacekeepers.
A Day of Peace in Afghanistan
Days before September 21st, Jeremy received a message from a leader of one of the most influential terrorist organizations. The message promised a ceasefire for one day, allowing peacekeepers to reach remote areas and provide vaccinations and essential supplies to women and children. Astonishingly, not a single attack occurred, and no lives were lost. News of the Taliban's unexpected cooperation and Jeremy's dedication spread worldwide.
In 2010, Jeremy and Peace One Day were awarded the Wateler Peace Prize for their efforts in promoting peace and bringing about positive changes in the political landscape. Today, September 21st is officially recognized as a day when all wars cease, allowing peacekeepers to move freely in conflict zones. Students and organizations raise funds through campaigns, which are then donated to charitable causes.
