Jerzy Żurawlew was a distinguished Polish pianist and music educator who played a significant role in the musical landscape of his country.
Early Life and Education
Born to a Russian father and a Polish mother, Żurawlew's first musical lessons came from his mother. He later studied at the Warsaw Conservatory with renowned pianist Aleksander Michałowski, where he graduated in 1913. Following his studies, Żurawlew remained at the Conservatory as a teacher.
Concert Career
From his student days, Żurawlew began performing as a concert pianist. He gained particular recognition for his interpretations of Franz Liszt's works.
Polish Citizenship and Post-World War II Years
After 1917, Żurawlew became a Polish citizen and taught at various musical institutions in Poland until the outbreak of World War II. The war and its aftermath brought challenges to Żurawlew, but by 1949, he successfully revived the Chopin International Piano Competition.
Chopin Competition and Legacy
