Jess Carver: A Footballer and Coach
Early Life and Football CareerJess Carver began his football career with Blackburn Rovers, making one appearance for the club during the 1935-36 season. He then moved to Newcastle United, debuting in August 1936 against Barnsley. Carver's most notable achievement with Newcastle was a fourth-place finish in the Second Division. In total, he made 70 league and 6 FA Cup appearances for the United.
His playing career was cut short by the outbreak of World War II, during which he served as a policeman.
Coaching Career
After the war, Carver began his coaching career in 1946 as an assistant manager at Huddersfield Town. He later moved to the Netherlands, where he coached Xerxes and the Dutch national team.
International Experience
In 1948, Carver returned to England to manage Millwall. A year later, he moved to Italy to take the helm at Juventus. In his first season, he guided the team to the Serie A championship, breaking the club's 15-year title drought. The following season, Carver was dismissed and returned to his homeland, where he briefly worked with West Bromwich Albion.
Return to Italy
In mid-1951, Carver returned to Italy, helping Marzotto avoid relegation to Serie B. In 1953, he took over at Torino, but left after one season to join Roma. He also managed Lazio and Coventry City in England before returning to Lazio.
Under Carver, Lazio achieved a third-place finish in Serie A. This success caught the attention of Inter president Angelo Moratti, who hired him with the goal of winning the Scudetto. However, Inter performed poorly and finished a disappointing ninth, leading to Carver's dismissal.
Later Career
In 1959, Carver was appointed by Genoa, but was fired after losing 2-6 at home to Juventus. His final club in Italy was Lazio, where he managed for the remainder of the 1960-61 season. He later coached Apoel in Greece during the 1962-63 season.
