Jessica Long is an American Paralympic swimmer of Russian descent. She was born with a congenital anomaly that led to the amputation of both her legs at the age of 13 months. Jessica was born in Irkutsk, Russia, although some sources mention her birthplace as Bratsk. After being left at the maternity ward by her birth mother, she was transferred to an orphanage in Irkutsk. It was in Irkutsk that Steve Long, an American, came to adopt her and brought her to the United States.
