Biography of Bud Spencer
Bud Spencer was an actor, screenwriter, producer, and athlete. He was born Carlo Pedersoli on October 31, 1929, in Naples, Italy, into a family of manufacturers. At the age of two, his sister was born. In 1935, Pedersoli started school, and in 1937, he began swimming for the first time. In 1940, he moved with his family to Rome, where he attended high school and joined the swimming section.
In 1946, after completing his education, Pedersoli enrolled in university to study chemistry. However, circumstances prevented him from obtaining a higher education as his family moved to Uruguay. There, he worked on an assembly line in Rio de Janeiro, became a librarian in Buenos Aires, and served as a secretary in the Italian embassy in Uruguay. In 1948, Pedersoli returned to Italy and entered university to study law. He continued his involvement in sports and became the Italian champion in both freestyle and butterfly swimming. He was also the first Italian athlete to swim 100 meters in less than a minute. Pedersoli won the Italian championship for seven consecutive years.
In 1952, he participated in the Summer Olympic Games in Helsinki and finished fifth in the freestyle event. In the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, he placed 11th and ended his swimming career in 1957. In 1960, Carlo Pedersoli returned to Rome and married Maria Amato, whom he had known for 15 years. They had a son named Giuseppe in 1961, followed by a daughter named Christiana a year later. Their second daughter, Diamante, was born in 1972.
Career in Film and Music
Between 1960 and 1964, Pedersoli worked as a composer under the RCA label, writing songs for other singers, including Rita Pavoni. He even had small concert tours where he accompanied himself on the guitar. In 1964, after the death of his father-in-law, Pedersoli terminated his contract with RCA and opened a small film studio. He produced documentary films about animals for the Italian television channel RAI.
Pedersoli made his first appearance on screen in 1951 as an extra in the film "Kamo gradesh." In 1967, thanks to his wife's connections, he received an offer from Giuseppe Colizzi to star in the serious Western film "God Forgives... I Don't!," where he first met his future film partner, Terence Hill. Later, when spaghetti Westerns became popular, the film was renamed and re-dubbed, turning into a comedy. Pedersoli chose the stage name Bud Spencer in honor of his favorite actor, Spencer Tracy. The surname "Spencer" was inspired by the American beer brand Budweiser or the colloquial term "buddy."
Political Involvement and Awards
In 2005, Pedersoli ran for the position of regional prime minister of Lazio from the Forward, Italy party but was unsuccessful due to the party's poor performance. Throughout his career, Bud Spencer received several awards, including the Bambi Award in 1975, the Jupiter Award in 1978 and 1979, and the François Truffaut Award in 1990 and 1996.
