Biography of Jessica McClintock

Jessica McClintock, a fashion and fragrance designer, began her career in the fashion world "a little late" at the age of 38, but quickly made a name for herself, becoming synonymous with romance. At the peak of her brand, 'Jessica McClintock', the annual sales volume reached approximately $100 million.

Early Life and Education

Jessica Gannon McClintock was born on June 19, 1930, in Presque Isle, Maine. Her father was a shoe trader, and her mother worked as a cosmetologist. Jessica shared her desire to create dresses with her mother, who helped her daughter develop her talents. She initially gained knowledge from her grandmother, Verna Hedrick, during her childhood. From 1947 to 1949, Jessica attended Boston University. At the age of 19, she dropped out of school to marry Al Staples, a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Shortly after their wedding, Jessica earned a bachelor's degree in arts from San Jose State University in California. She and Staples had a son named Scott, who initially assisted his mother and later became a Hollywood actor. In 1963, Jessica's husband died in a car accident. She remarried Fred McClintock, a pilot, but their marriage ended in divorce in 1967. After the divorce, Jessica and her son moved to San Francisco, California.

Entrepreneurship in Fashion

In 1969, McClintock met Eleanor Bailey, who was seeking investors for the local clothing store, 'Gunne Sax Company'. Jessica provided $5,000 and became Bailey's partner, responsible for the design and production of a new clothing line. When Bailey decided to step away from 'Gunne Sax', Jessica became the sole owner of the store. She started with a single collection and expanded her company into a diversified retail business, targeting international customers interested in purchasing wedding, youth, and children's fashion. McClintock's main focus was on "romance", and her designs appealed to the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. In 1979, she launched two new lines: one for girls under the 'Gunne Sax' brand and another for modern clothing under the 'Jessica McClintock' name. Both projects were successful, leading to the opening of their own retail stores. The first store opened in San Francisco in 1981. A year later, Jessica's son joined her company and released two clothing lines called 'Scott McClintock Dresses' and 'Scott McClintock Sport'. In 1987, Jessica officially renamed 'Gunne Sax' to 'Jessica McClintock'. She also added a pajama line and a set of fragrances to the assortment.

Expansion and Recognition

By the mid-1990s, McClintock had opened 41 boutiques, and her dresses were successfully sold in department stores in the US and other countries. The 'Jessica McClintock' corporation became a family business, with Jessica appointing her brother, Jack Hedrick, as vice-president and her cousin, Bruce Hutchins, overseeing the boutiques. Jessica Hutchins, Jessica McClintock's niece, controlled the production of the wedding clothing line. From 1993 to 1996, the organization 'Asian Immigrant Women Advocates' (AIWA), which supported Asian immigrants, launched a campaign to draw attention to the labor practices of McClintock's subcontractors. AIWA called for a boycott of the 'Jessica McClintock' corporation. The boycott ended in 1996 after both parties reached an agreement, with Jessica making concessions to the workers and establishing the Worker Education Support Fund.

Fragrance Line

The first fragrance under the 'Jessica McClintock' brand, also named 'Jessica McClintock', was introduced in 1988 and became one of the best-selling fragrances in the US. The second women's fragrance, 'Jess', was released in 1995. The first men's fragrance, 'Scott McClintock', was exclusively sold in McClintock's boutiques. In the summer of 2001, Jessica presented the perfume 'Jessica McClintock Number 3', and in the spring of 2003, she introduced three 'Gunne Sax' fragrances named 'Jasmine Kiss', 'Vintage Vanilla', and 'Raspberry Romance'. Other popular perfume compositions included 'New Victorian' and 'Jessica McClintock Silk Ribbons', created specifically for brides.

Later Years and Retirement

In 2008, the financial downturn significantly impacted the business, resulting in a drastic decrease in designer dress buyers. After more than forty years of creating satin, silk, and tulle dresses, fragrances, and other products, McClintock retired at the age of 83. By November 2013, all of her designer stores and retail locations, including the online store, were closed.

Jessica McClintock received numerous awards throughout her career, including the 'Ernie Award', 'California Excellence Award', 'Tommy Award', 'Best California Designers Award', two Lifetime Achievement Awards, and the 'Excalibur Award' from the American Cancer Society. She earned a Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Since 1994, she has repeatedly been listed among the "50 Leading Women Entrepreneurs".
