Jewel Kilcher, also known as Jewel, is an American pop-rock singer. She was born in Utah, but grew up in a small village in Alaska. Jewel started pursuing music at the age of six, initially performing in nearby villages and tourist destinations. At the age of 16, she enrolled in the Michigan Academy of Fine Arts to study opera singing and it was there that she began writing her own songs.

Early Career and Breakthrough

After some time, Jewel found a job as a singer in a coffee shop, where her talent started gaining recognition in the surrounding areas. Several record companies showed interest in signing a contract with the young singer, but Jewel chose to work with Atlantic Records. In early 1995, she released her debut album "Pieces of You."
