His Royal Highness Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck: Heir to the Bhutanese Throne

His Royal Highness Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck is the second son of King Jigme Singye Wangchuck and Queen Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck. He is the half-brother of the current King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.

Education and Early Life

Prince Jigyel received his primary and secondary education in Bhutan. In 2003, he graduated from the private Choate Rosemary Hall boarding school in Wallingford, Connecticut. Following a three-year academic break, he pursued his undergraduate studies at St. Peter's College, Oxford, where he graduated in 2007.

Military Service and Oxford Studies

Notably, during the summer after graduating from Choate Rosemary Hall in 2003, Prince Jigyel secretly enlisted in Bhutan's militia. He underwent two months of military training before enrolling at St. Peter's College. However, he left the college after four weeks to participate in Bhutan's operation against Assamese militants. Despite this, official records from both the college and Oxford University indicate that he successfully completed his degree in 2007.

Succession to the Throne

On December 14, 2006, following the abdication of his father and the enthronement of his half-brother, Jigyel Ugyen became the Crown Prince of Bhutan. He remains the heir presumptive to the throne and plays an active role in supporting the King and the Bhutanese government.
