Biography of Saparagali Begalin
Saparagali Begalin was a Kazakh Soviet writer and one of the founders of Kazakh Soviet children's literature. He was the father of film director Majit Begalin. In 1915, he graduated from the Russian-Kyrgyz school. From 1921 to 1935, he worked as the chairman of the Degelen village council, a member of the Karkaralinsky district executive committee, a people's judge, a responsible worker in the management of the Turkestan-Siberian Railway, and the Narkomzem of Kazakh SSR. From 1935 to 1960, he worked for the newspaper "Temirzholshy," the Institute of Linguistics and Literature. He became a member of the CPSU in 1940. Begalin was awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples, two Orders of the Badge of Honor, and USSR medals.
Literary Work
Begalin began his literary career as a poet. His first poem, "Kazakhim Yunoshamyna" ("To Kazakh Youth"), was published in the magazine "Ayap" in 1914. In his lyrical-romantic poems and verses such as "The Falcon's Revenge" (1943), "The Tsimlyansk Sea" (1953), "The Mysterious Spring" (1963), and others, Begalin celebrated the transformations in the country and the beauty of his homeland. His poem "The Winged Kazakh" (1947) is dedicated to the Hero of the Soviet Union Nurken Abdirov. Many of his stories and novels, aimed at children, such as "Yermek's Apple" (1955, 1985), "Satzhan" (1947, 1973, 1978), "Young Branch" (1953), "Teenager" (1960), "School Friends" (1961), "Chokan's Passes" (1971), and others, are permeated with love for the Motherland, the ideals of Soviet patriotism, and internationalism.
Contributions to Kazakh Culture
Saparagali Begalin was also involved in collecting and researching examples of Kazakh oral creativity. He made a significant contribution to the publication and edition of works by famous folk poets such as Isabay Isabayev, Doskay Alimbaev, Shashubay Koshkarbayev, Kuat Teribaev, and Toleu Kobdikov. He also wrote a monograph on the life and works of Jambul Jabayev (1946). Approximately 50 songs have been created based on Begalin's poems, including "Pioneer Song," "Karakoz," "Spring," "Lullaby," "White Dove," "Yearning for You, Beloved," and others. Some of A.S. Pushkin, M.Yu. Lermontov, T.G. Shevchenko's poems, as well as stories and novels by D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak and L.V. Solovyova, have been translated into Kazakh by Saparagali Begalin.
Legacy
The State Republican Children's Library in Almaty is named after Saparagali Begalin in honor of his contributions to Kazakh literature and culture.
