Biography of Jil Sander

Jil Sander was born on November 27, 1943 in Wesselburen, Germany. She studied textile design in Germany and the United States before starting her career as an assistant editor at McCall's magazine in New York and Brigitte magazine in Hamburg. In 1968, she opened her first store where she sold her own creations.

Establishment of Jil Sander Moden

In 1969, Jil Sander founded the marketing company Jil Sander Moden in Hamburg. Three years later, she achieved sensational success with the introduction of the "layered style" known as Onion.

Expansion into Cosmetics and Leather Goods

In 1979, Jil Sander introduced Jil Sander Cosmetics. In the 1980s, she became a professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 1984, she launched Jil Sander Leder, a line of leather goods.

International Recognition and Expansion

Jil Sander made history in 1985 by becoming the first German designer to showcase her collections in Milan instead of Germany. In 1993, she opened her first store in Paris, and in 1994, she expanded with branches of Jil Sander Spa in Milan and New York.

Awards and Fragrances

In 1995, Jil Sander introduced Jil Sander Eyewear and received the Order of the Federal Republic of Germany. She was honored with the Fashion Group Award in New York in 1996. In 1997, she launched her menswear collection. Jil Sander is also the creator of various fragrances, including Jil Sander Woman Pure, Jil Sander Women, Jil Sander Men, Jil Sander Sun, and JIL.

Departure from Jil Sander Fashion House

In 2000, Jil Sander stepped down as the leading designer of her fashion house due to differences in opinions with Prada boss Patrizio Bertelli, who owned 75% of the company.
