Early Life and Education
Jill Tracy Jacobs Biden was born on June 3, 1951, in Hammonton, New Jersey. She spent most of her childhood in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. Her father, Donald C. Jacobs, was a bank manager, and her mother, Bonny Jean, was a homemaker.
In high school, Biden was a bit rebellious but loved English classes. She graduated from Upper Moreland High School in 1969. In 1987, she earned a Master of Arts degree in English from Villanova University.
Marriage and Career
Biden has been married to Joseph Robinette Biden Jr., the 46th President of the United States, since 1977. They have a son, Hunter Biden.
Before her husband entered politics, Biden worked as an English teacher. She began teaching in 1976 at St. Joseph's on the Brandywine School in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1993, she started teaching English and reading comprehension at Delaware Technical and Community College.
Political Activism
Biden's political activism began in 2004 after the re-election of George W. Bush. She urged her husband to run for President and became a vocal supporter of his campaign in 2008.
When Joe Biden was elected Vice President, Jill Biden became the Second Lady of the United States. She continued to teach English at Northern Virginia Community College, making her the first Second Lady to hold a paying job outside the White House.
