Early Life and Education
Jill N. Craybas was born on July 4, 1974, in Providence, Rhode Island. She attended the University of Florida, where she played for the Andy Brandi-coached Florida Gators from 1993 to 1996. As a senior in 1996, Craybas won the NCAA singles championship. She graduated with a degree in telecommunications that same year.
Professional Career
Early SuccessCraybas turned professional in 1996. She won her first WTA singles title at the Tokyo Japan Open, defeating Silvija Talaja in the final. In 2006, she reached the quarterfinals of the Hobart International and advanced to the fourth round at the NASDAQ-100 Open.
Wimbledon Upset and Further Success
In 2005, Craybas gained widespread recognition for her third-round upset of Serena Williams at Wimbledon. She defeated Williams 6-3, 7-6, before losing to Venus Williams in the next round. In 2006, she defeated Kim Clijsters at the NASDAQ-100 Open.
Rankings and Notable Matches
Craybas reached a career-high singles ranking of 39 in 2006. She has also achieved success in doubles, reaching a career-high ranking of 41 in 2008. She won the Istanbul Cup doubles title in 2008 and represented the United States in singles at the Beijing Olympics.
