Jim Carroll, an American writer, is best known as the author of the bestselling book "The Basketball Diaries". The book was published in 1978 and is based on Carroll's autobiographical diary that he kept as a teenager. It later became a film with the same title, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, who portrayed the author.

Early Life and Basketball Career

In his teenage years, Carroll was a basketball prodigy and gained fame as a youth basketball star. However, at the age of 13, he became addicted to heroin. He chronicled his tumultuous coming-of-age in his diary, which he later revised and published as "The Basketball Diaries".

Early Success as a Poet

Even in the 1960s, Carroll earned a reputation as one of the best poets of his generation. His poetic works were highly regarded and contributed to the vibrant literary scene of the time.

Music Career

In the 1970s, Carroll's girlfriend, Patti Smith, convinced him to pursue a career in music. Keith Richards, the guitarist of the Rolling Stones, helped him secure a three-album contract. Carroll released his first album in 1980, followed by a second in 1982, and a third in 1983. His music is considered a classic in the New York punk scene.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1998, Carroll returned to music and released another album. He also collaborated with Rancid, Pearl Jam, Blue Oyster Cult, and Lou Reed. In addition to his musical endeavors, Carroll published several poetry collections and audiobooks. His last collection, "Void of Course: Poems 1994-1997", was released in 1998.

On a tragic note, Jim Carroll passed away from a heart attack at the age of 60 in his Manhattan home. His death occurred on a Friday, leaving behind a rich literary and musical legacy.
